∠ Angularity

Angularity · Orientación · ISO 1101 + ASME Y14.5

Example in plan

∠0.05|A|(withbasicdimension30°)

How to interpret it

The surface or feature must be oriented at the basic angle shown on the drawing (for example 30°) relative to datum A, with a 0.05 mm tolerance band measured perpendicular to that theoretical orientation.

What controls

Controls the orientation of a feature at a theoretical angle (a basic dimension, shown in a box) other than 0° or 90° to a datum — for those two specific cases, parallelism and perpendicularity are used. The tolerance zone is a band oriented exactly at the basic angle: the tolerance value is always expressed in linear units (mm), like every other GD&T tolerance, never in degrees or minutes.

How to verify

Place the part on the datum and use a master angle block (or a sine plate / sine bar) set exactly to the basic angle as the reference; measure the gap with feeler gauges or a dial indicator along the inclined surface. An optical comparator (profile projector) or optical protractor lets you check the actual angle directly against nominal. On a CMM, the datum is constructed, the basic angle is defined as the theoretical reference, and the linear deviation from that oriented band is evaluated, not the angle in degrees directly.

tolerance zone

Band oriented exactly at the basic angle relative to the datum, with a width equal to the tolerance value.

Datums and notes

Requires a datum and a basic dimension for the angle.

Workshop guideline values

General
0.05–0.2 mm on chamfers and inclined faces in general machining.
Accuracy
0.02–0.05 mm on parts with a tight functional angle.
High precision
0.005–0.01 mm on cams, inclined guideways or precision parts.

Guidance only: the drawing's value always wins.

Common mistakes when interpreting it

  • Reading the tolerance value as if it were an angular tolerance in degrees or minutes: it is always a linear distance (mm) giving the width of the band, not the angle itself.
  • Checking the angle with a generic protractor without a known master: without a reference calibrated to the exact basic angle, there is no way to tell whether the error is in the part or in the instrument.

How to get it in the workshop / if it comes out of tolerance

The basic angle is shown in a box (theoretically exact dimension). The angular tolerance is applied as an oriented zone. Common on functional chamfers and inclined parts.

Check the angle of the fixture, rotary table or tilting head with a protractor or sine plate BEFORE running the batch, not after the first part comes out of tolerance. Wear on a template or reference stop builds up gradually: check it periodically on long production runs, not just at the start of the lot.
