How to interpret it
On the drawing, “4× ⌀6.6 Drill” states a number of places requirement.
What controls
A numeric prefix indicating how many times the feature or dimension that follows it is repeated. It is an indication of quantity, not a geometric requirement: it says there are that many identical features, but says nothing about how they relate to one another. Their relationship is defined, where applicable, by the associated feature control frame; the same prefix can appear on the dimension and on the frame, and in the latter case it does create a group requirement for the set.
How to verify
A count of the features present on the part checked against the number on the drawing, plus verification of each one according to its dimension and its feature control frame. When the prefix appears on the feature control frame, the features are evaluated as a group, with a single alignment to the datum reference frame and no realignment between them. In the inspection report it is usual to break out each feature as a characteristic.
Common mistakes when interpreting it
- Confusing the quantity on the dimension with the same callout inside the feature control frame, which creates a group requirement.
- Assuming the features are equally spaced: that is a different callout.
- Manufacturing according to the count in the views without checking that it matches the stated number.
How to get it in the workshop / if it comes out of tolerance
Always count the features in the views and compare with the stated number: a mismatch between the two is a drawing error that must be cleared up. When programming, this quantity defines the number of repetitions of the cycle. And check whether the feature control frame also carries the prefix: that changes the inspection from individual to group.
If the number of features on the part does not match the drawing, do not resolve it on your own: it is an error that may be in the drawing or in the program. If the individual features conform but the group fails, the problem lies in the relationship between them (setup changes, backlash, origin) and not in each hole separately.
