Thread calculator and threading tools
Calculate a tap drill, identify a thread from its measurements and prepare CNC cycles. Compare threading methods, plan an insert repair or calculate a lathe shim angle.

Which threading tool do you need?
Start with the task you need to solve. A chart provides nominal reference sizes; a calculator lets you choose the method, material and conditions for your part.
Find a tap drill before threading
If you know the thread designation, open the tap drill calculator. Select the thread and distinguish cutting taps from forming taps: they do not automatically use the same drill. For a quick reference, open the family chart or the individual thread reference.
Identify a thread by diameter and pitch
If the designation is unknown, measure the diameter and pitch or threads per inch. The identifier suggests catalog matches; confirm the profile and whether the thread is internal, external, parallel or tapered before choosing.
Prepare a CNC threading cycle
Use the generator to prepare tapping, lathe threading or helical milling cycles. Select the control and operation conditions. Check the program against the machine manual before running it.
Choose a method, repair a thread or calculate a shim
The method selector compares options for the part and material. An insert repair needs the drill and tap specified by the kit. For lathe threading, the shim calculator relates pitch, diameter and number of starts to the helix angle.
Frequently asked questions: Which threading tool do you need?
What can these threading tools calculate?
Find a tap drill, identify a thread from measurements, prepare CNC cycles, compare threading methods, plan an insert repair and calculate a lathe threading shim.
Which thread families can I look up?
The catalog includes coarse and fine metric threads, UNC, UNF, BSP and NPT, among others. Check each family chart for the sizes and reference data available.
Should I use a thread chart or the tap drill calculator?
Use the chart to look up diameter, pitch and a reference drill. Open the calculator to account for the threading method and working conditions. Confirm the final drill with the tool manufacturer.
What measurements do I need to identify a thread?
You need a measured diameter and pitch in millimetres or threads per inch. Specify internal or external and confirm the profile when several families match. An approximate match does not prove interchangeability.
Can I use a cutting-tap drill for form tapping?
Not automatically. Form tapping displaces material to form the thread and usually requires a different hole preparation. Select the right method and validate the diameter against the tap instructions.
Can I run the generated CNC code directly?
The program is a starting template. Check control, tool, units, offsets, depth, spindle direction and machine conditions before simulation and a controlled trial.
