How to interpret it
On the drawing, “— 0.02 ↔ |A| between two collars” states a between requirement with a tolerance of 0.02 mm, measured from datum A.
What controls
A modifier that limits the extent of a geometric requirement to a specific portion of the part, defined between two points or features identified by letters on the drawing. Outside that portion, the requirement does not apply and the surface is governed by whatever the rest of the drawing says. It is used when only part of a continuous surface is functional: the bearing area of a long shaft, the portion of a profile that makes contact, the part of a slideway that is actually used.
How to verify
The evaluation is done using only the points within the specified portion: in coordinate measurement the probing path has to be explicitly limited, and with a dial indicator the sweep has to be limited. A typical mistake is to take points outside the portion and evaluate them together with those inside, so the calculated deviation includes uncontrolled areas.
Common mistakes when interpreting it
- Applying the requirement to the whole surface instead of the specified portion.
- Evaluating with points taken outside the portion and contaminating the result.
- Confusing the limits of the portion with the ends of the surface when they do not coincide.
How to get it in the workshop / if it comes out of tolerance
Identify the limits of the portion clearly before measuring and before machining: applying the tolerance to the whole surface when it is only required on a portion leads to rejecting good parts and spending machine time where it isn't needed. Conversely, if the portion is misidentified, the very area that matters may be left uncontrolled. Physically mark the limits on the part if the portion does not coincide with a change in geometry.
If the part fails, first check that the evaluation was done only over the specified portion: it is the most frequent cause of unjustified rejections with this modifier. If the failure is real, the corrections are those for the control in the frame. And if the portion is not clearly delimited on the drawing, get it clarified before machining, because the extent of the requirement changes completely.
