How to interpret it
On the drawing, “Wall thickness 6 MIN at rib area” states a minimum wall thickness requirement.
What controls
Minimum permissible thickness of a wall or rib of the casting. It serves two different purposes: on one hand, ensuring the metal fills the section before solidifying and the wall is free of shrinkage cavities; on the other, ensuring that enough load-bearing material remains after machining and any core shift. It is a limit dimension, not a nominal dimension: below it the part is rejected, above it the part just weighs more.
How to verify
Ultrasonic thickness gauge on the accessible face, which is the specific tool for walls with a closed internal cavity; thickness caliper or long-jaw vernier caliper when there is access from both sides. On complex parts, an external 3D scan combined with the core model, or outright CT scanning on critical parts, makes it possible to map the complete thickness. Sectioning a part from the first pour and measuring the cross-section is still the clearest method when one can be sacrificed.
Workshop guideline values
- General
- On the order of 5–8 mm on walls of medium-size iron and steel sand castings.
- Accuracy
- On the order of 3–5 mm with controlled molding and alloys with good castability.
- High precision
- Below 3 mm only in processes such as die casting, investment casting or permanent mold.
Guidance only: the drawing's value always wins.
Common mistakes when interpreting it
- Reading the minimum thickness as a nominal dimension and machining to that value: it is a limit that must not be reached from below.
- Checking it before machining and not after, which is when the wall actually ends up at its final thickness.
- Correcting a machining work offset to save another dimension without rechecking what happened to the wall thickness.
How to get it in the workshop / if it comes out of tolerance
The critical thickness is rarely where it appears on the drawing: it shows up where a machined face approaches an internal cavity whose core may have shifted. Before releasing production, measure the actual thickness in those areas on the first machined part. If the thickness is marginal, any work offset correction on the machine to save another dimension can take it below the minimum.
Thickness below minimum in a specific area: it is almost always core shift, and it is corrected at the foundry by reinforcing the core supports, not in machining. If the problem is filling (walls with missing material or a thin skin), the gating system and pouring temperature must be reviewed. From the machining side, the only lever is to distribute the allowance with good probing before cutting.
