Ra cast As-cast surface quality

As-cast surface quality · Fundición (ISO 10135) · ISO 1101

Example in plan

As-castsurfaceRa≤25inareasnototherwiseindicated

How to interpret it

On the drawing, “As-cast surface Ra ≤25 in areas not otherwise indicated” states a as-cast surface quality requirement.

What controls

Surface condition requirement for areas delivered as cast: mold texture, permissible roughness and limits on surface defects such as open pores, embedded sand, slag inclusions or laps. It is a different criterion from that of a machined surface, both in values and in how it is checked, and it is normally expressed by comparison with reference standards rather than as a profilometer number.

How to verify

Comparison with tactile and visual cast surface comparator standards, which is the practical method and the one foundries use. If the drawing gives a roughness value, it is measured with a profilometer on a representative area and with a sampling length suited to a coarse texture; a single reading on a loose grain means nothing. Surface defects are assessed by size and density against the drawing criterion, using a magnifier and raking light.

Workshop guideline values

General
Ordinary sand surface, very rough, on the order of tens of microns Ra if it is measured at all.
Accuracy
Machine-molded or permanent-mold surface, clearly finer than hand sand molding.
High precision
Investment casting or die casting, which reach finishes comparable to rough machining without touching the part.

Guidance only: the drawing's value always wins.

Common mistakes when interpreting it

  • Requiring a machining-grade roughness value from an as-cast face.
  • Measuring cast texture with a profilometer as if it were a machined profile and relying on a single reading.
  • Accepting or rejecting surface defects by personal judgment instead of against the limit set by the drawing.

How to get it in the workshop / if it comes out of tolerance

Do not carry machined-surface finish values over to a cast face: in the as-cast state, the texture is set by the mold. If an as-cast surface must seal or bear, the drawing has to say how that is achieved, and the norm is local machining. After grit blasting or shot blasting the appearance changes considerably; check which condition the criterion is defined for.

Surface rougher than permitted: points to sand grain size, compaction or pattern condition, all at the foundry. Embedded sand: shot blasting or grit blasting, never removal with a grinder in dimensioned areas. Isolated open pores in a non-functional area are usually acceptable, but the decision belongs to the drawing criterion, not the shop.
