Example in plan

NormalizedperEN10083-1

How to interpret it

On the drawing, “Normalized per EN 10083-1” states a normalizing requirement.

What controls

Heating above the transformation temperature followed by cooling in still air, which refines the grain and homogenizes the structure without leaving the material as soft as an anneal. It is used to even out cast, forged or welded parts and to provide a repeatable starting point before other treatments. Because cooling is in air, the result depends on thickness: a thick part and a thin one normalized in the same load do not end up the same.

How to verify

Hardness tester in several areas and, above all, on sections of different thickness, because that is where you see whether air cooling was uniform. On demanding parts, metallography on a test coupon to check grain refinement. The heat treatment certificate with temperature and cooling method is the documentary evidence of the process.

Common mistakes when interpreting it

  • Treating it as equivalent to annealing: normalizing leaves the material harder and with a different structure.
  • Expecting the same hardness on a part with very different sections.
  • Machining to final size without allowing for the scale and slight distortion the cycle leaves.

How to get it in the workshop / if it comes out of tolerance

It is a good starting condition for machining: harder than annealed but with cleaner chips in low- and medium-carbon steels. If the part has very different sections, expect different hardness between areas and some movement during machining. After normalizing, the surface usually carries furnace scale: the first pass must get underneath it.

Uneven hardness between thick and thin areas: this is the expected behavior of air cooling; if the drawing requires uniformity, a different treatment is appropriate. If the part distorts, split the subsequent machining and consider an intermediate stress relief. Heavy scale: request a controlled atmosphere or leave more stock.
