Example in plan

Fulldimensionalreportrev.Aattachedtoshipment

How to interpret it

On the drawing, “Full dimensional report rev. A attached to shipment” states a dimensional inspection report requirement.

What controls

Document recording the measurement results for the specified characteristics, with the nominal value, tolerance, measured value and verdict for each one. It is the evidence that dimensional verification was done and of what it found. It is usually required for the first article, on critical lots or as a contractual deliverable with each shipment, and it is structured on the drawing with numbered characteristics so that none is left uncovered.

How to verify

Each characteristic with the instrument suited to its tolerance: conventional gauging for dimensions, CMM for GD&T and profiles, profilometer for surface finish. Results are recorded with the units and decimal places appropriate to the tolerance, and the report must identify the part measured, the date, the operator and the equipment with its calibration status. When the measurement is temperature-sensitive, the room temperature is stated.

Common mistakes when interpreting it

  • Filling in the report with pass marks without recording the measured values.
  • Not identifying the instruments or their calibration status, which invalidates the report.
  • Measuring only the “important” dimensions when the report requires every numbered characteristic.

How to get it in the workshop / if it comes out of tolerance

Number the characteristics on a copy of the drawing and follow that order when measuring: it is the practical way not to miss dimensions and to let the customer follow the report. Always record the actual measured value, not “OK”: a report with pass marks but no values does not show trends and is useless when a problem arises. Identify the instrument used and its calibration on every line.

If a value is out of tolerance, do not cover it up with an unexplained “rechecked OK”: document the initial measurement, the cause and the action taken. If the customer rejects the report for missing data, the problem is one of format and is solved by agreeing the template before manufacturing. If repeating the measurement gives different results, the cause is usually the method (support, temperature, operator), and that must be resolved before issuing anything.
