⌒ ○ Profile all around

Profile all around · Perfil · ISO 1101 + ASME Y14.5

Example in plan

⌒0.15○|A|

How to interpret it

The line profile applies to the complete outline of the part in the view (circle symbol on the leader): the tolerance band runs around the whole perimeter.

What controls

Extends the scope of a profile tolerance (line or surface) so that it automatically applies to the ENTIRE closed outline shown in that view, without having to dimension each segment separately. It is indicated by a small circle at the elbow of the feature control frame leader ("all around"). This is different from applying profile only to a segment marked with a thick line: without the circle, profile controls only the segment explicitly indicated.

How to verify

Cover the complete outline with the chosen method (projector, scanner or CMM), without skipping any segment, including the transitions between straight and curved surfaces — that is exactly where failures tend to appear, so it pays to measure with a higher point density in those areas where the direction changes.

tolerance zone

The profile band applies to the entire closed outline of the view, without having to dimension each segment separately.

Workshop guideline values

General
0.1–0.3 mm on closed contours in general machining.
Accuracy
0.03–0.08 mm on tight functional contours.
High precision
0.01–0.03 mm on precision profiles with a demanding closure.

Guidance only: the drawing's value always wins.

Common mistakes when interpreting it

  • Measuring only the main straight and curved segments and skipping the transitions between them: that is precisely where CAM tends to leave the defect (where the toolpath lead-in/lead-out meet).
  • Confusing the "all around" circle with the "all over" square: the first is the entire outline of THAT 2D view, the second is the entire surface of the 3D solid — very different scopes.

How to get it in the workshop / if it comes out of tolerance

The circle on the feature control frame leader means "all around". Do not confuse it with "all over" (square symbol in ASME), which applies to the entire 3D surface.

The typical failure is not a process problem but a programming one: check that the CAM toolpath literally covers the entire closed outline without leaving a segment without a finishing pass (very common where the toolpath lead-in/lead-out meet). If one specific segment always fails, suspect that linking area of the program before the cut itself.
