⌓ □ Profile all over

Profile all over · Perfil · ASME Y14.5

Example in plan

⌓0.3□|A|B|C|

How to interpret it

On the drawing, “⌓ 0.3 □ |A|B|C|” states a profile all over requirement with a tolerance of 0.3 mm, measured from datums A, B, C in that order of precedence.

What controls

In ASME Y14.5-2018, the square at the elbow of the feature control frame leader ("all over") extends the profile requirement to the COMPLETE surface of the solid on all its faces, not just the outline visible in a particular view (that would be "all around"). It is the broadest-reaching symbol in the whole profile system: any face of the part that is not explicitly excluded by a note is subject to the same requirement.

How to verify

It requires scanning or probing the entire external surface of the part, not just the machined faces of interest: a full-body 3D scanner compared against the CAD model is the most practical method. Pay attention to faces that are not measured in the normal process (the back side, hidden cast areas), because "all over" includes them anyway unless the drawing excludes them with a note.

tolerance zone

The profile envelope applies to the complete surface of the solid, not just the view or outline shown.

Workshop guideline values

General
0.2–0.5 mm on cast or machined parts in general.
Accuracy
0.05–0.15 mm on parts with a cosmetic or functional requirement over their entire surface.
High precision
0.02–0.05 mm on aerospace or high-end parts with a controlled finish over the entire solid.

Guidance only: the drawing's value always wins.

Common mistakes when interpreting it

  • Forgetting that "all over" includes faces that are not normally measured (the back side, hidden cast areas): the requirement applies unless the drawing explicitly excludes them with a note.
  • Confusing it with plain profile of a surface: the "all over" square is a specific scope (the entire solid), not a generic synonym for 3D profile.

How to get it in the workshop / if it comes out of tolerance

A relatively new symbol in ASME. If the drawing is pure ISO it may not appear; check the drawing's general notes.

Because it applies to the WHOLE part, not just the machined view, check that no face has been left out of the CAM program (faces "forgotten" in CAM or left as-cast are the most common cause of failure here).
