M14 × 2: dimensions, pitch and tap drill

M14 × 2 is the coarse-pitch combination for a 14 mm nominal diameter. This page covers cut-tap hole preparation and the distinction from M14 fine-pitch variants used in other applications.

H is the height of the fundamental triangle; r indicates the root radius. Schematic, not to scale. The pitch diameter lies where the thread and gap have the same width.

01M14 does not always mean 2 mm pitch

The coarse series uses 2 mm pitch, but M14 × 1.5 and M14 × 1.25 also exist. In a repair, measure the actual pitch: diameter alone does not identify the variant.

02Preparing a 12 mm hole

VÖLKEL specifies 12 mm for an M14 × 2 cutting tap. Deburr the entry and allow sufficient bottom clearance in a blind hole. A forming tap requires its own manufacturer-specified hole size.

03Machining and thread fit

A 2 mm pitch gives 2 mm axial travel per revolution for a single-start thread. Drawing tolerances still govern fit. Set material, hole type and useful thread depth in the calculator before preparing a cycle.

Similar threads: check diameter and pitch

A fine-pitch M14 keeps the nominal diameter but changes the pitch, drill and fit. Check the full drawing designation.

Frequently asked questions · M14 × 2

Which drill is used for M14 × 2?

The consulted cutting-tap reference specifies 12 mm. Form tapping requires a separately checked hole size.

What is the pitch of M14 × 2?

Pitch is 2 mm. For a single-start thread this is also the axial travel per revolution.

Does the drill size determine finished tolerance?

No. The drill prepares the hole; the tool, process and specified tolerance class determine the fit to be inspected.
